Projects for Mensa International

News Team

The News Team began work in December 2022. The official charge is to “Gather, create, curate, and publish information and material of relevance to members,” which translates to simply “Create Mensa-centric content.”

Over the course of the past year and a half, as Chair, I’ve:

  • Researched, written, and created custom graphics for nearly 200 posts for the Mensa News group on Workplace, easily going beyond our original goal of two posts per week.
  • Worked with NM Chairs to craft articles focusing on their national Mensas.
  • Conducted interviews and surveys.
  • Assisted in gathering and curating information for the MI website Events listing.
  • Promoted national and international events and solicited post-event write-ups.
  • Shared summaries of ExComm meetings, helped solicit volunteers, and promoted international programs.
  • Worked closely with MI’s Exec Assistant to polish and prioritize posts.
  • Zoomed with team members and checked in on their progress and needs frequently.
  • Handled background work for other team members and offered topic suggestions.
  • Worked individually with team members regarding their ideas, needs, and engagement levels.
  • Detailed specific skillsets needed for additional team members.
  • Gathered statistics about NMs’ gender and age ratios, languages, and testing costs for use in articles and infographics.
  • Developed the first of several ready-to-publish ads for Workplace.
  • Collaborated on a Communications Survey with current DoA and ICO. and prepared a spreadsheet of most NMs’ current communications contacts.
  • Prepared a mock-up of a future digital magazine.

Name & Logo Committee

The primary function of the Name and Logo Committee is to ensure the correct and permitted usage of the Mensa mark. As a contributing member, I’ve:

  • Set up working group on Workplace.
  • Reviewed branding documentation from outside companies.
  • Responded to specific logo-use queries.
  • Reviewed  and commented extensively on pertinent bylaws and other policies that need revision.
  • Created detailed graphics to illustrate current name and logo rules.
  • Created downloadable files of 24 logo and banner variations.
  • Drafted a new, illustrated Trademark Manual and a simplified guide for logo use.

Anti-Kitten Tasks

I know, it’s a weird heading.

It all started when I complained about not having enough to do. I threatened “If I get too bored, I’m going to have to buy kittens and learn to knit.” Since then, several people have kindly asked for my help on a number of side projects:

  • Worked with ICO to review and suggest improvements to the MI website. This included creating graphic and text site maps, searching and gathering useful images for site redesign, reviewing mock-ups, and checking the entire site for broken links after an update.
  • Formatted “From the ExComm” columns for publication on the MI website.
  • Created or edited graphics for the MI e-newsletter and website.
  • Assisted the new Gifted Youth Chair by creating a template for GY Hot Topics tip sheets and then doing the typesetting for the first few.
  • Researched how to gather videos from the defunct YouTube site, and prepared graphics for use on a new and improved MI channel.
  • Assisted Director of Development with translating the online practice by reviewing text components of, researching and refining priorities for languages to be translated, then coordinating requests to NM Chairs.
  • Tediously gathered, formatted, and tagged files of past IBD motions for easy web searching.
  • Gathered, coordinated, and created content for new MI website.
